Husbands and Wives

Four Ladino Musical comedies in one act by: Matilda Koen-Sarano
Music by: Haim Tsur

In the history of artistic and cultural expression, theater is considered to be the youngest form. It is safe to assume that this is due to the fact that theatre is dependant on the coming to fruition of other social means of expression such as language.
A good example of this fact can be seen in the revival of the public theatre at the end of the XVI century, which occurred as a result of the Renaissance and combined the various arts. Ever since the middle ages, the various art forms such as prose, poetry, music and painting have revealed the great talents of their contributing artists.
In the specific theatre presented in the CD you now hold in your hands, it seems that history is repeating itself. Matilda Koen-Sarano has taken it upon herself, "with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm," to resurrect the creative literary genres of the Judeo-Spanish tradition.
Matilda began her labor of love by collecting the oral traditions kept alive only by the elderly generation and continued by then reciting them herself in front of an audience. Later on, she printed and published them in many books.
Matilda has written and published stories portraying the unique humor of the Spanish Jews; she has collected traditional recipes from her rich culinary culture and published them in cookbooks and lately she has collected various words of Spanish origin which belong to a language which is hardly ever spoken anymore, and compiled them in her dictionary. The theatre is the latest endeavor in her incredible artistic creation.
At the moment this theatre can only be experienced by listening since it lacks an important theatrical element crucial for stage performances, it is missing the actor.
Despite the fact that we are lacking actors who speak this Jewish language, Zelda Ovadia and Moshe Shaul make for a perfect pair of performers and joined by a brilliant composer such as Haim Tsur, they manage to breathe life into the various fascinating characters of the Judeo-Spanish world that Matilda has created.
I am confident that in the same way that many audiences around the world enjoy listening to Matilsa's literary creations as she presents them, this will also be the case with this theatre: young actors will take the stage and perform Matilda's creations in her own refreshing Jewish-Spanish language.

Maridos i Mujeres
